Facebook iOS App Update Fixes iPhone Battery Drain. Facebook squashed a “CPU spin” bug and ended lingering audio sessions to save iPhone battery life.
Following complaints of iPhone battery issues, Facebook has “been looking into the cause of these problems,” engineering manager Ari Grant wrote in a post. “We found a few key issues and have identified additional improvements, some of which are in the version of the app that was released”.
The first bug squashed was a “CPU spin” in the network code—what Grant equates to a child in the backseat asking “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” Stuck on repeat, the spin caused Facebook’s app to use more battery than intended. According to Galligan, the mobile app accounted for 15 percent of all battery reduction, despite the fact that he disabled background app refresh. The app continues operating, he said, because it “isn’t ‘sleeping’ properly when I hit the home button. Comparatively, Apple’s Safari browser accounted for 12 percent of Galligan’s battery usage over the week, followed by the Hue app, Messages, Apple MacBook Pro A1344, A1278 Laptop Battery Charger and the Home and Lock Screen, each of which took up 6 percent.
The Internet lit up last week with complaints about Facebook’s iOS app, which Matt Galligan, co-founder of now-defunct news aggregator Circa, called “the greatest offender of Apple a1331 battery drain” on his iPhone 6s Plus over seven days.
His Facebook app reportedly sucked up 15 percent of the device’s battery power, despite the fact that he disabled background app refresh. Comparatively, Apple’s Safari browser accounted for 12 percent of Galligan’s usage over the week, followed by Messages and the Home and Lock Screen, each of which took up 6 percent.
Facebook iOS app users are encouraged to update their app to version 42.0, and keep an eye out for more changes in the coming weeks.
